Development of Soil Moisture Control System Based on Irrigation Threshold Criteria Algorithm

In an automatic irrigation system, it is important to set threshold criteria that can automatically start and stop irrigation. The threshold criteria for irrigation is determined by the soil moisture level, which varies depending on the type of crop, the growing season, the soil texture, and the soil bulk density. It is difficult for a field farmer to figure it out directly because specialized knowledge and analysis experience are required. Therefore, the suitable soil moisture value was extracted from the existing data using the name of the cultivated crop, the cultivation area and the soil texture as the condition variables. The soil moisture standard for each crop type and growth period was made into a database. An algorithm that can set the soil moisture tension value suitable for the selected crop was developed. A system that can control soil moisture was developed by applying the algorithm to a system consisting of a sensor unit, a control unit, and an operating unit. The soil moisture value measured by setting the threshold criteria for each experimental plot showed a match rate of 97.3% in the -33 kPa experimental plot and 96.6% in the -25 kPa experimental plot. It is thought that the soil moisture control system will contribute to suppressing the decrease in productivity caused by the aging in the rural society and the decrease in the labor force.
